so i’ve been lax with the top 5’s, huh…
today’s is about labor day. it seems like every year it sneaks up on us. nobody is ever all that excited about it - yeah, it’s a day off, but it symbolizes the end of summer. so for whatever reason, i feel it doesn’t get that love that other holidays get. soooo, i have to come to labor day’s defense.
1. for all of us grownups, the symbolic end of summer has no meaning. we’ve been working all summer anyway. the real end of summer is a few more weeks away. head to the beach after labor day - it’s even better than it was in july.
2. labor day is a day off from work! (unless you work for tyson in shelbyville) personally, i only get 6 holidays a year (yeah, 6!!) - so i better appreciate every one of them. i can’t wait to have off on monday for labor day!
3. as a kid, labor day was a cruel joke in our house. my dad insisted that labor day was a day for labor, so we inevitibly ended up doing yardwork or cleaning all day. now as a grownup, i realize that most people have bbq’s on labor day - what fun! another reason to love labor day. (although i secretly anticipate a labor day in the future where i tell my children they need to labor on labor day!! mooohahaha)
4. while labor day is a symbolic end to summer, it’s also symbolic of the beginning of fall. and for a few weeks, we’ll have the best of both worlds. the beach and nfl football in the same weekend?!? sweet! i’ll just have a pumpkin flavored scone while i’m at it (that will be another topic about why nobody serves pumpkin flavored items in the summer, i mean seriously - you can buy pumpkin puree all year long).
5. and i guess on a serious note - labor day is supposed to be a day dedicated to the social and economic achievements of american workers - a national tribute to the contributions workers have made to the strength, prosperity, and well-being of our country. and even in times of questionable economics such as that we’re experiencing now - it’s still great being american.
ok, i’m off my soapbox now ;) go have a bbq, don’t labor, enjoy the summer, enjoy the fall, enjoy the day off.
